Bulging eyes.

I have a doe that has bulging eyes and seems to be getting thinner but not losing weight. Her backbone and ribs seem to be sticking out more than usual and she stands a little hunched. About 2 years ago she became very bucky and would chase all the does around. I tried to breed her to a buck two years in a row and she would never settle. She then got a precocious udder and it is still there after several months. Now her eyes look like they are bulging out and she seems skinny to where her hips and ribs and backbone stick out more. She makes a loud sort of snoring sound when she eats. Also her hair seems thinner then usual and she did not get a nice winter coat this year. What could cause them. She eats a lot and has not lost weight but really looks like she has.

She is getting free choice Sweetlix meatmaker 16:8 loose minerals. She was already wormed but it did not improve anything. She does not currently have a worm load. I did copper bolus her 4 months ago with a 4gm bolus and then I gave her another 2gm bolus dose two days ago. The end of her tail was still balding some. She seems like when she tries to swallow she has some issues getting everything to go down easily. I don't know if thyroid could cause this or not. The noise she makes almost continuously now is like a loud snore when she eats, drinks and usually when she breathes. I do give them sea kelp which has iodine in it but they do not have it free choice right now only occasionally. The place I get the kelp from only has conventional not organic and I am unsure of the iodine content in it because it does not state the amount.

Definitely feel her throat..make sure no blockage..but alsonif her thyroid is swollen and eyes buggies. I would be concerned about iodine deficiency. It's really no uncommon. Painting her tail web with iodine is a good test. Just paint the underskin of her tail and see how fast it aborbs...if absorbs under 24 hours..repaint, keep repainting until it stops absorbing. Then start feeling kelp out. Kelp is a wholesome source if iodine.

Hi Mercys Edge. We are dealing with the same thing with out goat? We are perplexed as to what the cause is. But the symptoms are the same. She was acting bucky. She had developed a precocious udder, huge actually. We had to milk her once or twice to give her some relief. Now she eats so much to where her sides bulge. She makes the snoring sound. And over time her eyes have started to bulge. At a loss of what to do? Did you see improvements ever? I do have iodine. And just wonder if this is a hormonal issue, but dont know course of action. Thx! Tammy @ Crazy Faith

Hi Tammy. Welcome to the forum. This thread is a few years old. If you start your own thread..more members can see it and offer help and support. But in the mean time..lets start by testing her iodine level. We do this by painting iodine on the tail web and see how fast it absorbs. If it absorbs within 24 hours..she needs it. Keep repainting until it stops absorbing and add kelp free choice for the herd. I look forward to seeing your new post and results of the test.

Best wishes
