Lice

When it rains it pours apparently. The day we had the Vet to check on our 13 week old with a urinary calculi, we also had a few with loose stools. He gave us Albon and Prohibit. We didn't treat all 8 with Albon and Prohibit, just the symptomatic ones. In hindsight we probably should have treated everyone, because we have already added 2 more to the Albon and Prohibit treatment. Several of them also have borderline to concerning famacha's. I'm getting them started on Red Cell today for that (6cc's/100 lbs)

While holding one of anemic guys this morning I noticed he has lice, a lot of them. Everyone has lice, the ones with concerning famacha's have it the worst 😭

My TSC does not have Cylence. They do have permethrin, so we are getting that. To make sure I'm doing this correctly, I spray all of my goats with the Permethrin along with the stall after it's cleaned, and the grass in their pen at a concentration of 1 cup of Permethrin to 8 cups of water. I do this once?

^^ This. Each time you treat, do a full bedding clean out. It may take 2 or 3 treatments to take care of them.

I know this wasn't in your question but you mentioned prohibit. Prohibit is a VERY strong dewormer. Be very carful with it, it has a VERY narrow safety margin when dosing. Personally, prohibit is a last resort here because it is so strong and has such a narrow safety margin.

Yes. Our vet really wanted us to give Prohibit along with Aldon. We weighed each goat and measured out their Prohibit down to a tenth of a cc. I was hesitant to use Prohibit, but so far so good. We checked on them every 2 hours the first 24 hours after Prohibit. What do you use for Barber Pole worms instead of Prohibit? I'm trying to build up a half way decent medicine cabinet for them.

I got Permethrin on them today. Got everything cleaned and sprayed and they've got iron on board now. I'm trying to decide between CyLence and Ivermec moving forward. I'd have to order CyLence. Ivermec we keep because of cattle, but I'd rather not have to treat over and over since they're so little. Despite all of this they are all still lively and social. The most anemic one has really perked up the last few days after getting a different hay and the minerals recommended by this community, and I am so appreciative.

I’ve always had luck using CyLence when my babies get lice. It’s safe and effective- but no matter what you use, you will need to treat at least 2x and be thorough in your cleanout.
My mamas never seem to get lice, even tho the snuggle up and sleep with their babies. I do contribute it their orange peel intake. I believe it makes them unsuitable hosts for external and internal parasites and would hate to know where I’d be at if I hadn’t discovered that early on in my goat keeping.

For orange peels, do you buy oranges from the store and dry the peels yourself?

One of my momma's is a master escape artist. She got out the big pen and had to be put back in with my little boys for a day, but that allowed me to brush her. I found one live bug on her that's it, so I sprayed her down, but she looked nothing like my few that were covered in them. My anemic babies have the most lice. One of them also had really loose stools, but he's completed five days of Albon and has been started on Red cell. Oddly enough my little guy that had the urinary calculi looks the best physically and has the best famacha. But, you are probably right, I'm reading stories of others experiences and it's making me paranoid. We've never lost a baby outside of one that was either stillborn or died very shortly after birth, so now I'm on high alert with all of these problems showing up at once.

☝☝ this. There is way more bad than good on here. Collectively this group has thousands and thousands of goats, most only posting when they have issues but never post when things are going great (I'm guilty of this myself). It is easy to get sucked in and paranoid. As you are making your list of supplies, try not to get overwhelmed, you don't need to buy everything up at one time.

Dehydrator would definitely work 😊
I like to have enough to store up so I have a coffee can full of them and can hand them out to everyone.
I shoot for 3x a week distribution. But I do do daily for 3-4 days after kidding. Also a week in spring I will do daily as well. Just assuming that they’ll have chance of getting worms when things are wet but warming up.
For the EO, you’ll still want to do it 2-3x a week as a preventive. Then can do daily if a fecal shows issue that needs more acute attention.
