well, i was stupid on saturday. I let everyone roam by the barn while i was working on building the quail enclosures. It was super hot, so i finally took a break and went to my house for maybe 15 min max. came out and one of my young pullets was scared laying flat by the tree in the yard. The yard is kind of far from the barn especially for the new birds that havent been out much. I was like maybe the pup decided to bring one in the yard? but nope the dogs were sleeping in the back.

So, i lost two of my svart hona's . The birds were scattered, all quiet until i came up and most ran towards me. found i pile of feathers right by the run. I cant believe it was so quick middle of the day.
Must of been the bob cat my neighbor told me about a couple weeks back. Or the kittens were big enough they were leaving the area.
All my adult birds were fine, they ran into the barn,
but the young ones were only out maybe 5 times for like 10 min each until that day. I still cant believe it. Lost the pair of blk beauties. It seemed like it went fast, so at least the birds were killed fast.
so down to two cockerels, the splash silverudds and one svart hona, two svart hona pullets, one splash silverudds and two mix breeds. The mix breeds were down in the black berries hidding. I was hoping another would show up but nope couldnt find them. im kind of suprised they didnt get the splash but i think the svart honas were just easy to catch and didnt see them coming from the trees.

I am still so sad. I am hoping to have time next weekend before i go ,to put some hot wire around the runs, as i will be gone with the dogs for a week. My runs are preety secure except the large run it has netting to keep hawks away on the top so if a animal wanted to chew it up they could get in. The cats lay on it and it doesnt break but a bob cat is a different story. my animal sitter is only coming 1x a day so they couldnt close them in the coop.

do you guys think a live trap would work? thinking i can rent one possibly, but then what would i do with the predator? find other blm land and hope it makes it? if its the bob cat or kittens, they will get shot eventually as everyone is loosing birds around me. one or two isnt so bad but if they keep it up.... the wild turkeys seem to be staying out of the way, they are a bit larger and faster though i think and can fly preety well vs our chickens.

I don’t know how it works in the US, but here we would call the Conservation officer for our area.

Bobcats aren't easy to live trap at all, knowing their territory and travel paths will only somewhat help catch these wily predators. There are usually state laws, regulations, permits and a whole lot of legalities towards trapping bobcat you might need to know in advance to avoid fines and penalties. If a bobcat were to be caught in a live trap, releasing it into a new territory wouldn't be allowable in most states. The local State Wildlife Commission has a website (usually) that could answer some of your questions and might be able to offer assistance or referral towards dispatching a nuisance animal.
I'm sorry you're having to deal with the losses daisymay.

No. I used a vice that was attached to a table. Was able to break the neck quickly.
hmm, never thought of that so just put neck in vice and tighten until snug then yank? im all for trying different methods, the broom stick works just have to lay them down which some get scared doing. I cant aim/have enough force/ good enough for a axe

Yes. The table that the vice was attached to was on wheels. When I yanked, the table moved with it. So I had to tighten the vice till it broke the neck. My vice is a heavy metal vice.
