Hi, I have an elderly ND doe just diagnosed with coccidia. The vet prescribed Corid 9.6 solution, undiluted 20 ml/day for 5 days. I gave the first dose yesterday. Ten minutes later my doe began screaming intermittently. Another few minutes and she was screaming constantly, struggling to breath, laying on the ground. I texted my vet and was told my doe probably inhaled some of the Corid and it was stinging her lungs.
My doe didn’t cough or choke when I gave her the Corid. And she was fine until 10 minutes later. She thankfully recovered and seems okay now but I’m afraid to give her another dose. Can anyone here speak to what might have happened? Should I continue the treatment? TIA!

I would not use it at all again. It mayhave been too strong but if she had an allergic reaction next time could be worse. Ask the vet for Marquis instead. Goat dose is 1 cc per 5 pounds of a 5% strength. If strength is different juat beed tobadapt the dose based on strength. Its one time dose then a booster in 10 days.

Other choices are albon..vet may have that. It's a 5 day treatment. OTC if you can find it is Dimethox or Sulfa Drug..injectable given orally. Doses are in the medication file but you are welcome to let us know what you got and we can get proper dose. ( sometimes vets give sheep or cow dose...goats are different)

Thank you! I have Duramycin injectable and hubby just ordered Albon injectable. Is one a better choice over the other?
I would stop the Corid and use something else. How old is she? Is she scouring?

Here's a post from @NigerianDwarfOwner707 that lists other coccidia treatments/dosages: Preventing & Treating Coccidiosis in Goats
No scouring. She’s more than 10 years old, how much more, I don’t know. Her only symptoms are weight loss and mild weakness. We had testing done and the only thing that came back abnormal was slightly elevated coccidia. Thanks for the link!

Duramycin is antibiotic..I would use the Albon. Use oral. I would do 1 cc per 5 pounds day one and 1 cc per 10 pounds day 2 thru 5. Follow up with 5 days probiotics to restore her good gut. flora.
I would also suggest sending a fecal 5 days or so after the treatment to Meadowmistlabs. For a fecal. Just to confirm your vets findings and see if Albon addressed the coccidia.
Hows her famacha? How is her eating? Rumen function?

Her famacha is a 4 but bloodwork showed iron levels were at the low end of normal. The vet gave her an iron injection while waiting test results. Her rumen sounds fine. She’ll graze but seems to have difficulty eating hay and grain. She drops the grain and barely attempts to eat hay. I’ve been giving alfalfa pellets softened in water to supplement. The vet checked her mouth. No teeth issues, no sores. She gobbles up grass and weeds when I put the goats in our big pasture each day. It’s kind of a mystery. Her coccidia count wasn’t tremendously high according to the vet, but it was the only abnormality that the vet found. I’ve had the goat for 5 1/2 years. The previous owner told me the goat was 2 years old, but when I got her home I found that she had all her adult teeth. She had 2 kids that we purchased with her, but she hasn’t gone into heat since them, for five years. it’s possible that she’s just very very old and declining. I just want to do everything I can to help her and make her comfortable in her old age.

Awe..teeth was my next question. Good to know those are good.
I would continue anemia treatment until her famacha is a 3 or better.
*Red cell 6 cc per 100 pounds once a day for a week then once a week until color improves. Or injectable iron 4 cc per 100 pounds sub qsame duration. Injectable can somtimea cause a reaction much like the corid. Even if she did well be fore have epinephrine or a large 20 to 30 cc dose of Benadryl on the ready.
*Injectable Vit B 12 ..4 cc per 100 pounds once a day until famacha improves.
*30 cc of a 50/50 acv/water once a day to help speed recovery
Lots of browse foods, leaves, pine and cedar are great food..calf manna added to her alfalfa smooth.
Offer two buckets fluid..one plain water and one with electrolytes for her to choose.
Daily probiotics 3 hours after all treatments...evening often works good when treatment is done in the AM.

Thank you for all the great info! I have Red cell and Probios so I’ll get her going on those. I’ll also add calf manna to her hay pellets. I’m assuming injectable B 12 is by prescription only? I’ve been giving her B12 tablets but not sure how well absorbed they are. I’m going to pick up some Benadryl and have it on hand before I give her the first dose of Albon. I really believe she had an allergic reaction to the Corid. It was terrifying. I’ll also pick up some electrolyte powder. She has always turned her nose up to Apple cider vinegar in her water but I’ll give it a try again.

Yes..B12 is RX. If the vet won't give it you can get b complex PLUS which offers a bit more 12 in it..or b complex if nothing else. Injectable is always best with B vitamins.
The acv and water should be given as a drench..so 15 cc each acv and water..the drench it once a day. Really helps speed recovery.
