Just a question - I gave ivomectrin to my gang orally. Can someone explain in what circumstances or advantages for it to be given topically, sublingually or subcutaneously?

My understanding of it is that the topical pour-on works best for external parasites such as mites, and the injectable given orally or subcutaneously works best for internal parasites.

Giving it orally causes it to be absorbed more quickly and reach a higher concentration in the bloodstream, while with injection is absorbed more slowly and takes longer to leave the bloodstream.

I always administer it orally unless I suspect a very heavy wormload. This could cause too rapid a die off and risk developing anemia or even enterotoxemia from all the dead worms in the gut.

Well I can tell you is pour on is way easy to give lol. Especially if you get the dosage gun. When its time to hit them again you just walk by like your up to nothing and shoot them with the stuff lol :) seriously though the other may work faster but the pour on still works great for internal bugs as well. That's all I have ever used and has always done well ;)

I have just given it orally. My father inlaw tried to give me the topical stuff for cattle but I wasn't sure if I could use that or not. Could I if I needed to? He is selling the farm so he would give it to me if I could use it.
Spoke with the lady at the co-op who has sheep and she gave me the other kind - injectable. Very expensive $1/cc. I had 4 goats who had never been wormed. Haven't seen any creepy crawlies on theme since. Seemed to settle them down a bit too.
